Moving day checklist

Hurray! You’ve found the perfect home, finished all the paperwork, and you’re ready to move to your new digs. Before you do, take a peek at our Moving Checklist to help make the process seamless—and even enjoyable.

The checklist

3–4 weeks before moving:

  • Fill out your change of address form with the USPS to make sure you don’t miss any important mail.
  • Decide if you’re going to use a moving company or handle it on your own. Regardless, now is the perfect time to start collecting cardboard boxes for reuse.
  • Sort through your belongings and decide what you want to sell and what you want to keep. If you’re saying farewell to some of your items, list them to Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist.

1–2 weeks before moving:

  • Transfer utilities, such as electric, gas, and water, to your new home.
  • Start packing! Packing gradually, bit by bit, is always less stressful than a wild marathon at the end. Start with items you don’t need, such as seasonal decorations, off-season clothing, kitchen appliances you rarely use, and books or decor that you can live without for a few weeks.

It’s moving day!

  • Start the day bright and early.
  • Check out your new home. If it’s a little dusty and in need of some TLC, you might want to spend an hour or two cleaning before you start moving all of your possessions in.
  • Don’t forget to eat! After a long day of moving, treat yourself to your favorite takeout and open a bottle of wine—it’s time to celebrate your new home!
